What is my zodiac sign? This question is easy to answer: your zodiac sign, more precisely your Sun sign, is determined by the sign the Sun was in when you were born. And because the Sun moves through all twelve signs over the course of a year, your birth date is all you need to start with. The table below shows each sign, its date range, element, and ruling planet. For an even quicker answer, try our zodiac sign calculator: enter the day and month to see your result right away, including a note if you were born on the cusp.
What is my zodiac sign by date?
You can find your zodiac sign by checking your birthday in the table: each row shows the period when the Sun moves through that sign, along with its element and ruling planet.
| Zodiac sign | Date range | Element | Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | March 21 to April 19 | Fire | Mars |
| Taurus | April 20 to May 20 | Earth | Venus |
| Gemini | May 21 to June 20 | Air | Mercury |
| Cancer | June 21 to July 22 | Water | Moon |
| Leo | July 23 to August 22 | Fire | Sun |
| Virgo | August 23 to September 22 | Earth | Mercury |
| Libra | September 23 to October 22 | Air | Venus |
| Scorpio | October 23 to November 21 | Water | Mars / Pluto |
| Sagittarius | November 22 to December 21 | Fire | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | December 22 to January 19 | Earth | Saturn |
| Aquarius | January 20 to February 18 | Air | Uranus / Saturn |
| Pisces | February 19 to March 20 | Water | Neptune / Jupiter |
Some signs have two rulers listed: the modern and the traditional ruler. Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces were assigned their current rulers (Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune) only after these planets were discovered with telescopes. Before that, their rulers were Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter.
Why are these the exact date ranges?
Because they follow the Sun’s path through the year, and that path is no coincidence. The Sun takes around 365 days to travel through the zodiac and spends about one month in each sign. The cycle begins with Aries at the spring equinox, around 21 March. From there, Western astrology continues counting, linking each sign to a specific time of year. That’s why every birthday is automatically assigned a Sun sign. Each sign can also be divided into three sections. Learn more in the decans of the zodiac signs.
What is my zodiac sign if I was born on a cusp date?
Your birth year, and often even the time of day, determines your sign: the dates in tables like this are approximate. The exact moment the Sun moves from one sign into the next shifts by up to a day from year to year. So if your birthday falls right on a transition date, such as the 22nd or 23rd of a month, your sign may depend on your birth year.
In that case, there’s only one way to know for sure: calculate your birth chart accurately. This is the only way to determine the Sun’s position for your exact date and place of birth. If you’re unsure, don’t rely on the table alone. Get your chart calculated.
The quickest way is with our free calculator: it shows your Sun sign, along with your Moon sign and Ascendant.
Which zodiac signs belong to each month?
Almost every month is shared by two signs. We have a dedicated page for each month with both signs, the date the Sun changes signs, and what people born in that month have in common:
| Month | Signs |
|---|---|
| January | Capricorn through January 19, then Aquarius |
| February | Aquarius through February 18, then Pisces |
| March | Pisces through March 20, then Aries |
| April | Aries through April 19, then Taurus |
| May | Taurus through May 20, then Gemini |
| June | Gemini through June 20, then Cancer |
| July | Cancer through July 22, then Leo |
| August | Leo through August 22, then Virgo |
| September | Virgo through September 22, then Libra |
| October | Libra through October 22, then Scorpio |
| November | Scorpio through November 21, then Sagittarius |
| December | Sagittarius through December 21, then Capricorn |
What’s the difference between your zodiac sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant?
Your zodiac sign, more precisely your Sun sign, describes your essential self: what drives you at your core. It’s the best-known part of your horoscope, but only one part. Two other placements are just as important:
- The Moon reveals your emotional world and inner needs. Learn more in Moon sign: meaning and how to calculate yours.
- The Ascendant describes how you come across to others and how you meet the world.
Find out how these three work together and why they form a fuller picture when considered together in Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Some people immediately recognize themselves in their Sun sign, while others feel their Moon sign or Ascendant describes them more closely. That’s completely normal and a good reminder that a person is more than a single symbol.

Is there a 13th zodiac sign?
No, not in astrology. The claim about “Ophiuchus” resurfaces every few years and confuses two things: the constellations in the sky, which really are different sizes and include Ophiuchus, and the astrological zodiac, which consists of twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each. Western astrology uses this tropical zodiac, which begins at the spring equinox. So your zodiac sign remains what it is.
Is my zodiac sign the same as my Chinese zodiac sign?
No. Your Western zodiac sign depends on your birthday within the year, while your Chinese zodiac sign depends on your birth year, more precisely on the Chinese solar year, which begins in early February. You can explore both systems side by side. Our page on the Chinese Horoscope Book explains how the four pillars of year, month, day, and hour are determined.
Which zodiac sign is compatible with mine?
Traditionally, compatibility is assessed by comparing elements and angles: signs of the same element usually get along easily, fire and air complement each other, as do earth and water. You’ll find all 78 combinations and their compatibility assessments in our zodiac sign compatibility guide. But to get a truly personal answer about the two of you, you need both birth charts, as in a Relationship Horoscope Book.
