What Does Your Chinese Horoscope Reveal?

Your Chinese horoscope describes the moment of your birth through eight signs in four pillars: Year, Month, Day and Hour, each with a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch with animal sign. Together they reveal your Day Master, the distribution of your five elements, your useful element and your life phases.

How Do We Calculate Your Chart?

Carefully and transparently, because this is exactly where the typical errors occur. Your year begins with Lichun, the start of spring around 4 February, not on 1 January and not at the Lunar New Year. The months change at the solar terms (Jieqi), calculated with astronomical precision. We calculate the day and hour pillars using the true local time of your birthplace: without daylight saving time, corrected for longitude and the equation of time. The Chinese day begins at 11 p.m. We determine your animal sign according to the Chinese solar year starting at Lichun, as is standard in BaZi astrology, not according to the calendar year starting on 1 January.

What's inside your book?

First, your four pillars, each with its own chapter: origins and early years, influences and career, your own center, and your expression. Then your day master, with a portrait of its element and the question of what it needs. Next come your five elements with their proportions, your useful element, and concrete suggestions for everyday life, followed by your life phases over the coming decades. At the end, everything comes together as a complete picture, and a practical section with questions and note pages invites you to reflect and explore. Every technical detail is automatically checked against the calculation before delivery.

To see the same person through the language of Western astrology, explore the Birth Chart Book. For your own life path, there is the Lunar Nodes Book, and for career and talents, the Career Horoscope Book. Our guide on Chinese zodiac signs explains how to determine your animal sign yourself.

Does the Chinese Horoscope Book make a good gift?

Yes, especially because it is unlike anything else you can give as a gift: a book about wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, about animal signs, and about one's own center. A wonderful choice for a birthday, Chinese New Year, or a fresh start. Available in a premium edition with a dedication page.

You'll need the recipient's date of birth, place of birth, and exact time of birth. If the birth time isn't known, a gift voucher is the better option.

FAQ: Common questions about the Chinese Horoscope Book

What is a Chinese horoscope based on the Four Pillars?

Chinese astrology describes the moment of your birth using eight characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch for the year, month, day, and hour. These four pairs are called the Four Pillars, or BaZi in Chinese. We interpret them as a mirror for self-reflection, not as a prediction.

When does the Chinese year begin?

Not on 1 January. In BaZi astrology, the year begins with Lichun, the start of spring, around 4 February, and that is exactly how we calculate it. People born in late January or early February therefore often still belong to the previous year. The months, too, follow not the calendar but the solar terms (Jieqi), which shift every four to five weeks.

Is my Chinese zodiac sign the same as the one in the newspaper?

Usually yes, but not always. We determine your zodiac sign the way BaZi astrology does, based on the Chinese solar year starting at Lichun, not on the calendar year starting 1 January. Because the Lunar New Year falls on a different date each year, the two systems diverge within a short window. If your birth falls in that window, we name both animals in the book and explain the difference.

Why does the Chinese Horoscope Book need the exact time of birth?

The fourth pillar is the Hour Pillar, and a Chinese double-hour spans two hours. Without a birth time, this pillar is missing, and with it a quarter of your chart. That is why the birth time is required here. You can usually find it on your birth certificate or family record book.

What is true local time in the Chinese Horoscope Book?

The time on your birth certificate shows zone time, often adjusted for daylight saving. The double-hours, however, follow the position of the Sun at your place of birth. We therefore convert your time to true local time: without daylight saving, corrected for longitude and the equation of time. In Germany, that can mean a difference of up to 50 minutes, which is exactly where many free calculators fall short. The Chinese day begins at 11 p.m., so the Hour of the Rat already belongs to the next day.

Why does the Chinese Horoscope Book ask for female or male?

For one calculation only: in the classical method, the direction in which your life phases (Luck Pillars) run depends on the polarity of the year stem combined with this input. The method recognizes only two directions. We use this information solely for that purpose and nothing else.

What is the Day Master in Chinese astrology?

The Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar represents you in Chinese astrology. It is one of the ten signs, meaning an element in its Yin or Yang form, for example Yang Wood with the image of a tree or Yin Fire with the image of a candle. The entire chart is read from this stem: every other sign is interpreted in relation to it.

What do the five elements mean in a Chinese horoscope?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are present in every chart to varying degrees, visible in the Heavenly Stems and hidden within the Earthly Branches. We calculate each element's share and show you which element dominates, which is missing and how this relates to your Day Master. From this we derive your useful element, the quality that brings you into balance.

How reliable are the strength and useful element in a Chinese horoscope?

These are deliberately simplified reference points. We weight the eight signs and the season of your birth using a method we explain in the book. Classic subtleties such as combinations, clashes and special structures are not included. Please use the information as a guide, not as a verdict.

What are the life phases (Luck Pillars) in a Chinese horoscope?

Starting from a calculated onset age, an additional pillar shifts every ten years, coloring the backdrop of your life. The onset age and direction are determined by the distance between your birth and the next or previous solar term. We interpret the current phase and the ones ahead as qualities and invitations, not as events.

How accurate are the calculations in a Chinese horoscope?

The solar terms, and therefore the Year and Month Pillars, are calculated with astronomical precision, accurate to the second, and verified against official tables and an independent calendar library. If your birth falls close to a boundary, for example just before Lichun or at a double-hour changeover, we note this explicitly in the book.

What is the difference between a Chinese horoscope and a Birth Chart Book?

The Western Birth Chart Book works with planets, signs and houses. The Chinese horoscope works with Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches and the five elements, focusing above all on balance: what is abundant, what is missing, what brings equilibrium. Both books describe the same person in two very different languages and complement each other well.

How quickly will my Chinese horoscope arrive?

The digital book (ePub, PDF) arrives by email within approximately 5 hours of payment and is also available in your account. The printed book is made individually for you: allow approximately 7–10 business days for delivery to Germany, and approximately 2–3 weeks to all other countries, including printing and shipping.

What is the difference between the book and the Premium edition of the Chinese horoscope?

Both are printed A5 books with your personal cover, and the digital edition is included right away. The Book is a softcover, while Premium is a hardcover on premium paper with a dedication page, a lovely gift.

Can I exchange or cancel my Chinese horoscope?

Because the book is individually calculated and written for you, the statutory right of withdrawal for personalized products does not apply (§ 312g para. 2 no. 1 of the German Civil Code). If your book arrives damaged or with a printing error, we will of course replace it.

What happens to my data with the Chinese horoscope?

We use your birth data and the direction of your Luck Pillars solely to create your book, and we treat them confidentially. Only your first name is included in the interpretation. For more details, please see our privacy policy.

Every statement in the book is automatically checked against this calculation before delivery, and you can view a complete sample book before purchasing.
