Calculate Your Chinese Zodiac Sign: Which Animal Are You?

By the KosmosGenie editorial team · 24 July 2026 · updated 11 September 2026 · 4 min read

Alongside the Western zodiac, there’s another very old system: the Chinese zodiac. It looks not at your birth month, but at your birth year, assigning you one of twelve animals. Here you’ll find the complete lookup table, the important exception for anyone born in January or February, and a look at the current years: the Fire Horse 2026 and the Fire Goat 2027.

How do I calculate my Chinese zodiac sign?

The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle: each year is assigned one of twelve animals, always in the same order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. After twelve years, the cycle starts again. So your animal sign is determined solely by your birth year.

Here’s what makes it interesting: the Chinese year doesn’t begin on 1 January. The Lunar New Year follows the lunar calendar and falls on a date between 21 January and 20 February, depending on the year. For example, the Year of the Horse began on 17 February 2026. The Year of the Goat begins on 6 February 2027.

What is my Chinese zodiac sign?

Find your birth year. If you were born in January or February, be sure to read the next section:

Animal sign Birth years
Rat 1948 · 1960 · 1972 · 1984 · 1996 · 2008 · 2020
Ox 1949 · 1961 · 1973 · 1985 · 1997 · 2009 · 2021
Tiger 1950 · 1962 · 1974 · 1986 · 1998 · 2010 · 2022
Rabbit 1951 · 1963 · 1975 · 1987 · 1999 · 2011 · 2023
Dragon 1952 · 1964 · 1976 · 1988 · 2000 · 2012 · 2024
Snake 1953 · 1965 · 1977 · 1989 · 2001 · 2013 · 2025
Horse 1954 · 1966 · 1978 · 1990 · 2002 · 2014 · 2026
Goat (Sheep) 1955 · 1967 · 1979 · 1991 · 2003 · 2015 · 2027
Monkey 1956 · 1968 · 1980 · 1992 · 2004 · 2016 · 2028
Rooster 1957 · 1969 · 1981 · 1993 · 2005 · 2017 · 2029
Dog 1958 · 1970 · 1982 · 1994 · 2006 · 2018 · 2030
Pig 1959 · 1971 · 1983 · 1995 · 2007 · 2019 · 2031

Some people also call the Goat the Sheep. The Chinese character doesn’t distinguish between the two animals, so it refers to the same sign.

What about people born in January or February?

Because the Chinese year begins sometime between late January and mid-February, the first weeks of a calendar year still belong to the previous year’s animal. For example, anyone born on 1 February 2026 was born in the Year of the Snake (2025), because the Year of the Horse didn’t begin until 17 February 2026. So if you were born between 1 January and 20 February, it’s worth checking the exact Lunar New Year date for your birth year. A quick search for “Chinese New Year” plus the year is all you need.

The five elements: Why 2026 is a Fire Horse

In Chinese tradition, each animal is also paired with an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. The elements change every two years, so the same animal-element pairing returns only after 60 years, in the famous 60-year cycle. The Fire years are up next: 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, and 2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat. Traditionally, the Horse is associated with energy, a love of freedom, and drive, while the Goat is associated with gentleness, creativity, and a sense of community. The Fire element adds extra warmth and expressiveness.

As with the Western horoscope, we see these yearly themes as prompts for reflection, not predictions. They give a year a particular story and feel, but what you make of it is up to you.

Chinese and Western astrology: two perspectives, one person

It’s fascinating to look at both systems side by side because they focus on different things: your Chinese animal sign describes the year you were born into, while your Western zodiac sign describes the seasonal moment of your birth. A Libra born in the Year of the Tiger carries different stories than a Libra born in the Year of the Rabbit. If the two pictures seem to contradict each other, that isn’t a mistake. It’s an invitation to notice more closely which parts you recognize in yourself.

And if you want to get really specific, there’s an even more detailed way to explore: not your year or month, but the exact moment you were born. Your Birth Chart Book uses your birth date, time, and place to calculate your complete birth chart, including your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, all the planets and their connections, then interprets it word by word, just for you. No birth-year text, no boilerplate: your chart, your book.

KosmosGenie treats astrology, numerology, and tarot as tools for self-reflection and entertainment: as a mirror, not a prediction. None of this replaces medical, legal, or financial advice.
