Two people with the same zodiac sign, born three weeks apart, and yet one feels like a textbook Scorpio while the other doesn’t feel like one at all. The decans offer an old explanation for this. Each sign is divided into three sections, and each section has its own distinct quality. People born in the first decan express their sign in its purest form. Those born later also carry something of a related sign.
What is a decan in astrology?
A decan is one-third of a zodiac sign, or a section of exactly ten degrees along the zodiac. Each sign spans thirty degrees, and the Sun takes about one day to move through each degree. That means each decan lasts about ten days, and every sign has three: the first from 0 to 10 degrees, the second from 10 to 20 degrees, and the third from 20 to 30 degrees. Together, the twelve signs make up 36 decans.
The name comes from the Greek word for ten. In German, you may also hear the terms “Dekanat” or “Dekan”. They mean the same thing.
How is your zodiac decan calculated?
Your decan depends on the exact position of your Sun in your sign. If it’s at 7 degrees Scorpio, you’re in the first decan. At 14 degrees, you’re in the second, and at 26 degrees, you’re in the third. For most people, your birth date is enough to work this out, since the Sun moves so steadily that the boundaries are known to within about a day.
About a day, because the boundaries can shift by a day from year to year. If you were born on a boundary date, either the last or first day of a decan, you’ll need your birth time to be sure. The same applies to the day when the zodiac sign itself changes. To find out what this means if you were born on the cusp, see What Is My Zodiac Sign?.
Which decan does each zodiac sign belong to?
The table shows the decans, with dates from the spring equinox of 2026 to the spring equinox of 2027, and the qualities that modern astrology associates with each decan. The dates are based on the Sun’s position, so in other years, the boundaries may shift by a day.

The pattern behind this is simple: the three decans of a sign follow the three signs of its element. Scorpio is a water sign, so the other two water signs, Pisces and Cancer, influence it in the second and third decans. The article on the four elements explains why the elements matter so much.
What do the three Scorpio decans mean?
The three Scorpio decans differ in how Scorpio’s depth comes across: most purely in the first, more gently in the second, and more caringly in the third. Scorpio season begins on 23 October in 2026, so here’s a closer look at this example. All three decans share what makes a Scorpio: depth, seriousness, and a keen sense of what’s left unsaid.
The first decan, from 23 October to 1 November, is considered Scorpio in its purest form. People born during these dates often come across as focused and determined, and they’re not easily sidetracked from a goal. Their friends know the combination of deep loyalty and a need to keep some things private.
The second decan, from 2 to 11 November, has a Pisces influence. The intensity remains, but becomes gentler and more open. Many Scorpios born during this decan are deeply empathetic and sometimes sense more than they’d like to.
The third decan, from 12 to 21 November, carries something of Cancer. Family, belonging, and care become important, and Scorpio’s depth is strongly focused on their loved ones. Protection and closeness take center stage.
Where do zodiac decans come from?
Decans are older than the zodiac as we know it. In ancient Egypt, priests divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars that rose above the horizon in sequence. Each group marked about ten days of the year and helped determine the hours of the night. When Greek astrology adopted the zodiac with its twelve signs, it mapped the 36 sections onto them, with three in each sign.
That’s why there’s more than one way to interpret the decans. The older tradition assigns one of the seven classical planets to each decan in a fixed sequence. The interpretation that’s common today, and shown in the table, works with the elements. Both systems have their followers, but the elemental approach is easier to understand in everyday life.
Why don’t I feel like my zodiac sign, even with the right decan?
Because the Sun is only one part of the picture. Your decan adds nuance to your Sun sign, but it doesn’t replace your Moon or Ascendant. If you have a Scorpio Sun and a Gemini Moon, you may see yourself as more lighthearted and talkative than any Scorpio description would suggest. If your Ascendant is in Libra, you may come across as more balanced.
That’s why it’s worth looking at the three key points together: Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Only then can you see whether your decan’s influence is reinforced or whether another part of your birth chart sets the tone.
How can I find out which decan my Sun is in?
The easiest way is to check the table above, as long as you weren’t born on a boundary date. If you’re not sure you have the right sign, start with the free zodiac sign calculator. To find your decan, look at the Sun’s degree: for example, if it’s at 18 degrees Scorpio, you’re in the second decan.
You can find this degree in your Birth Chart, where it’s listed for every planet, not just the Sun. The Moon, Venus, or Mars can also be in a decan of their sign, and earlier traditions interpreted them in the same way.
