Many people know the planets and signs, but the houses in astrology often remain a mystery. Yet they are key to understanding the whole picture. While the signs show how a planet expresses itself, the twelve houses reveal where its influence unfolds in your life: in relationships, work, home, or the hidden parts of yourself. You can think of them as the twelve major areas of life into which the horoscope wheel is divided.
What are the houses in astrology?
The horoscope is a circle divided into twelve segments called houses. They are counted counterclockwise, starting at a very important point: the Ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon. This is where the 1st house begins, followed by the other eleven.
Each house traditionally has its own area of focus. When a planet is in a particular house, its energy is understood to be especially visible in that area of life. So Mars in the house of relationships is interpreted differently from Mars in the house of career. Some birth charts have many planets concentrated in certain houses, while others have empty houses. That is completely normal too. It does not mean that area of life is missing, only that it unfolds more quietly.
What do the twelve houses mean?
Here are all twelve houses and the areas of life traditionally associated with them in astrology:
| House | Traditional theme |
|---|---|
| 1st house | Self, appearance, first impression |
| 2nd house | Values, possessions, self-worth |
| 3rd house | Communication, thinking, immediate surroundings |
| 4th house | Home, family, roots |
| 5th house | Creativity, love, self-expression |
| 6th house | Daily life, work, health |
| 7th house | Partnership, close relationships |
| 8th house | Transformation, shared resources, depth |
| 9th house | Meaning, worldview, faraway places and travel |
| 10th house | Career, public life, calling |
| 11th house | Friendships, groups, goals |
| 12th house | Retreat, unconscious, stillness |
You may notice a pattern: The first houses focus more on you and your immediate surroundings, while the later houses reach further out into partnerships, work, community, and finally the inner, hidden world.
Angular, succedent, and cadent houses
Traditionally, the twelve houses are also divided into three groups, depending on how strongly a planet in each group expresses itself outwardly:
| Group | Houses | Influence (traditional) |
|---|---|---|
| Angular houses | 1, 4, 7, 10 | visible, influential, action-oriented |
| Succedent houses | 2, 5, 8, 11 | strengthening, developing, preserving |
| Cadent houses | 3, 6, 9, 12 | learning, adapting, processing |
The four angular houses begin at the chart’s axes: the 1st at the Ascendant, the 7th at the Descendant, the 10th at the Midheaven (MC), and the 4th at the Imum Coeli (IC). Planets in these houses are considered especially noticeable in your appearance, home, partnerships, and career. Planets in succedent houses develop what the angular houses set in motion, while planets in cadent houses learn, organize, and process.
Why is the Ascendant so important for the houses?
Because the 1st house begins at the Ascendant, the Ascendant also determines the position of all the other houses, known as the house cusps. And because the Ascendant changes signs about every two hours, the houses shift throughout the day too.
This has an important consequence: You need your exact birth time for a reliable house system. Without it, you can find out which sign a planet is in, but not which house it is in with certainty. We explain how to find your starting point step by step in our article How to Calculate Your Ascendant. For details on what your Ascendant brings to your chart, see our guide to the twelve Ascendants.
What house systems are there?
You may come across the fact that there are different house systems, such as Placidus, Koch, or the Equal House system. They differ in how the circle is divided mathematically and can shift the house cusps slightly.
You don’t need to worry about this when you’re getting started. The main thing to know is that Placidus is widely used in Western astrology and is often treated as the standard. Which system is “right” in every detail is an open question in astrology. For your personal understanding, the picture of the twelve areas of life is more than enough.
Houses are an invitation, not a verdict
As with the horoscope as a whole, the houses are an invitation to self-reflection. An emphasized 10th house does not mean you are “destined for a career”. Instead, it invites you to reflect on your role in the world and your calling. Astrology describes possibilities and tendencies, not fixed rules.
What does an empty house in a birth chart mean?
Ten planets are spread across twelve houses, so several houses in almost every birth chart are empty. That does not mean that area of life is missing from your chart. In that case, tradition looks at the sign on the house cusp and its ruling planet. For example, if Libra is on the 7th house, Venus can reveal how you approach partnerships, even if there is no planet in the 7th house itself.
Which house is the most important?
There is no fixed ranking, but the four angular houses, 1, 4, 7, and 10, are considered the most powerful because they begin at the chart’s axes. The houses containing the Sun and Moon are also important: The Sun’s house shows where you want to shine, while the Moon’s house shows where you feel at home. A house with three or more planets, known as a stellium, also draws a lot of attention in an interpretation. You can find out how the Sun expresses itself in the 12th house in Sun in the 12th House.
Can I determine my houses without a birth time?
Not reliably. The houses depend on the Ascendant, which changes signs about every two hours. If your birth time is unknown, your birth chart can still be interpreted: Your planets in signs and their aspects remain the same, but the houses and Ascendant are unknown. That is exactly how we approach the Birth Chart Book when you select “I don’t know my birth time”. It is worth checking your birth certificate or family record book, though. The time is almost always listed there.
Which house represents career, and which represents love?
Career, calling, and your public role belong to the 10th house, while daily work and routines belong to the 6th. Love is divided between two houses: The 5th represents falling in love, flirting, and creativity, while the 7th represents committed partnerships. If you’d like to explore your work style through your birth chart, the Astro Bite Your Career Code is a concise introduction. The 12th house, the house of hidden things, is explored in Your Hidden Side.
