If you’re looking at your birth chart for the first time, you probably know your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Then you’ll see two more abbreviations, at the top and bottom of the chart: MC and IC. They’re rarely explained and often overlooked, even though they’re among the four most important points in a birth chart. The MC describes where you want to go in life. The IC describes where you come from and what supports you.
This article explains both points, their axis, the meaning of the MC in all twelve signs, and how to calculate your MC and IC.
What Is the MC in Astrology?
MC, short for Medium Coeli, Latin for “middle of the sky,” is the point on the zodiac that was highest in the sky at the time of your birth, due south. In a birth chart, it sits at the very top and forms the cusp of the 10th house in most house systems. It represents career and calling, goals, reputation, public role, and the direction in which you want to grow.
The MC is not a planet, but a point, like the Ascendant. It doesn’t have its own nature. Instead, it takes on the qualities of the sign it’s in and the planets that aspect it. That’s what makes it so personal: it moves one degree every four minutes, so it’s almost never the same for two people born on the same day.
What Is the IC?
IC, short for Imum Coeli, or “bottom of the sky,” lies directly opposite the MC at the very bottom of the birth chart and forms the cusp of the 4th house. It represents your background, family, home, roots, and the inner foundation you set out into the world from.
Where the MC points outward, the IC points inward. It describes what you need to feel safe and at home, how you experienced your childhood, and what you carry forward from it. The IC often becomes more significant in the later half of life. Many people return to what their IC represents.
Why Do the MC and IC Belong Together?
The MC and IC form an axis. They’re always directly opposite each other, so they’re always in opposite signs. If your MC is in Leo, your IC is in Aquarius. If your MC is in Virgo, your IC is in Pisces. The axis describes the tension between your goals and your origins, between what you want to achieve in the world and what keeps you grounded at home.
Together with the Ascendant and Descendant axis, it forms the cross that divides every birth chart into four quadrants. Learn how the other axis works in How to Calculate Your Ascendant and The Descendant: What It Means.
What Does the MC Mean in Each of the Twelve Signs?
The sign on your MC describes the style in which you show up publicly and develop your career, not a specific profession. An MC in Aries wants to lead and get things started, an MC in Taurus wants to build something lasting, and an MC in Libra wants to mediate and create.
| MC in | Direction | IC in |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | leading, getting things started, pioneering | Libra |
| Taurus | building, preserving, working with values and material | Scorpio |
| Gemini | communicating, writing, teaching, connecting | Sagittarius |
| Cancer | nurturing, protecting, creating spaces for others | Capricorn |
| Leo | creating, performing, taking responsibility in the spotlight | Aquarius |
| Virgo | analyzing, improving, serving through attention to detail | Pisces |
| Libra | balancing, advising, beautifying, negotiating | Aries |
| Scorpio | researching, transforming, exploring life’s depths | Taurus |
| Sagittarius | teaching, traveling, creating meaning, broadening horizons | Gemini |
| Capricorn | leading, organizing, taking responsibility for the long term | Cancer |
| Aquarius | innovating, connecting, standing for an idea | Leo |
| Pisces | healing, helping, making an impact through art or spirituality | Virgo |
The right-hand column also shows what supports you. Someone with an MC in Capricorn who leads and organizes needs an IC in Cancer, with a home that feels warm and secure. Someone with an MC in Pisces who helps and heals needs the order and routine of an IC in Virgo as a counterbalance. How Do You Calculate Your MC and IC?
You need your date of birth, exact birth time, and birthplace to calculate your MC and IC. The birth time is crucial: the MC moves one degree every four minutes and through an entire sign in about two hours. Without your birth time, your MC can’t be determined.
To calculate the MC, astrologers use the sidereal time of birth and the geographic longitude of the birthplace. Calculating it by hand is tedious, so every birth chart program does it automatically. The IC is then exactly 180 degrees opposite. Your personal Birth Chart Book shows and interprets both points.
Is the MC the Same as the 10th House?
In most house systems, such as Placidus and Koch, the MC is the cusp of the 10th house, and the IC is the cusp of the 4th house. In the Whole Sign house system, however, the MC can fall anywhere in the 9th, 10th, or 11th house, because each house corresponds to one entire sign. But the MC remains the same point in the sky in every system.
In interpretation, the MC describes the direction, while the 10th house describes the area where that direction unfolds. Usually, the two align. If they don’t, read the MC as your goal and the 10th house as the stage for it. Learn the basics of the houses in The Twelve Houses in Astrology.
What’s the Difference Between the MC and the Ascendant?
The Ascendant describes how you come across to others and how you approach situations. The MC describes where you want to grow and what you want to be known for. The Ascendant is the first impression. The MC is the reputation that lasts.
For example, with a Gemini Ascendant and Pisces MC, you may come across as lighthearted, talkative, and curious, but your true direction is quieter: helping, creating, and being there for others. Many people experience this difference as a tension between what others expect of them and what they truly want.
What Do Planets on the MC or IC Mean?
A planet close to the MC has a particularly strong influence on your career direction and public image. A planet close to the IC strongly influences your background, home, and inner foundation. A distance of up to five degrees is generally considered close.
- Sun on the MC: Visibility and leadership are major life themes, often accompanied by ambition that shows early on.
- Saturn on the MC: Responsibility comes later, but lasts. You become known for being dependable.
- Moon on the IC: Family, home, and background have a strong influence, often with a close connection to your mother or childhood home.
- Uranus on the IC: An unsettled background, frequent moves, and a need to reinvent your home for yourself.
- Venus on the MC: A career connected to beauty, relationships, or balance, and a friendly reputation.
