Solar eclipse on 2 August 2027: The eclipse of the century over Spain and what Germany will see

By the KosmosGenie editorial team · 4 September 2026 · updated 11 September 2026 · 4 min read

It’s still almost a year away, but if you want to see it, now’s the time to plan: On 2 August 2027, the Moon’s umbra will pass over southern Spain, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. Totality will last up to six minutes and 23 seconds. No solar eclipse will last this long again this century. In Germany, the eclipse will be visible as a partial eclipse. Here’s what to expect, and where, and what astrology sees in this eclipse.

What will happen during the solar eclipse on 2 August 2027?

During a total solar eclipse, the new Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. Along a narrow strip known as the path of totality, it gets dark in the middle of the day, the Sun’s corona becomes visible, and stars appear. In 2027, this strip will extend from the Strait of Gibraltar through southern Spain and North Africa, then across Libya and Egypt to the Arabian Peninsula. The maximum eclipse will occur in Egypt near Luxor.

The eclipse will last so long for two reasons: the Moon will be particularly close to Earth at that time, making it appear larger, and Earth will be far from the Sun during the summer, making the Sun appear slightly smaller. Together, these factors create a wide shadow that moves slowly across the Earth.

Where will the 2027 solar eclipse be total?

  • Southern Spain: Cádiz, Málaga, Jerez, and parts of Andalusia. This is the closest destination for travelers from Germany to experience totality.
  • North Africa: Tangier, Oran, and Tunis are in or near the path of totality.
  • Egypt: Luxor, where the eclipse will last the longest.
  • Arabian Peninsula: Jeddah and Mecca.

Some hotels in Andalusia are already fully booked for this week. If you want to experience totality, don’t wait until spring 2027.

What will you see of the solar eclipse in Germany?

In Germany, the Sun will be partially obscured in the late morning on 2 August 2027. In Berlin, the Moon will cover about 35 percent of the Sun’s disk, with a significantly greater coverage in the southwest and slightly less in the northeast. It won’t be as dramatic as the spectacle in Spain, but you’ll still be able to see it. And the same rule applies as for any partial eclipse: never look at the Sun without protection. Eclipse glasses with CE certification or a solar filter for binoculars are essential, even when the Sun is only 35 percent covered.

The 2027 eclipse season

Eclipses almost always come in pairs. The solar eclipse on 2 August will be followed by a lunar eclipse on 17 August 2027. And as early as February 2027, there will be a first eclipse season, with an annular solar eclipse on 6 February that won’t be visible in Germany. If you’re interested in how these events are connected, all eclipses occur near the lunar nodes, which have been in Aquarius and Leo since July 2026.

The astrological side: New Moon in Leo

Astrologically, a solar eclipse is a New Moon with extra significance. On 2 August 2027, the Sun and Moon will be in Leo, very close to the South Node. Leo is associated with the heart, self-expression, pride, and creativity. A New Moon there asks: What do I want to bring into the spotlight, and why?

Because the eclipse falls on the South Node, the interpretation is less about making a fresh start from scratch and more about letting go of a role that has become too restrictive. Some astrologers see South Node eclipses as endings that make room for something new.

As always, an eclipse doesn’t cause anything. It acts like a spotlight, illuminating a theme that was already there. People with the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant in the early degrees of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, or Scorpio may feel it most strongly. Only your birth chart can show whether your own planets are affected.

Practical tips for the day

  1. Get your eclipse glasses in advance. They’ll be hard to find in summer 2027.
  2. Choose a spot with a clear view to the south, as the Sun will be high in the sky.
  3. If you’re traveling to Spain: A spot near the centerline of the path of totality will give you a longer eclipse. Coastal towns near Cádiz and Málaga are well positioned.
  4. Don’t just look up. During totality, the light changes, animals go quiet, and the temperature drops. That’s the part you won’t forget.
