On 27 July 2026, the lunar nodes changed signs. For a year and a half, the axis ran through Pisces and Virgo. Now the North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node is in Leo, where they will stay until early 2028. In astrology, this is more than a calendar detail: the lunar nodes describe the direction in which something wants to unfold, collectively and personally, in your own birth chart.
What are the lunar nodes?
Astronomically, the lunar nodes are not celestial bodies but two points: the places where the Moon's orbit crosses Earth's orbit around the Sun. Eclipses only occur when a new moon or full moon falls close to one of these points. The nodes move backward through the zodiac and take about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle.
Astrologically, the North Node (ascending node) is seen as the direction worth growing toward, while the South Node (descending node) represents familiar ground, where you come from, something you no longer need as your only answer. The two are always exactly opposite each other. It is never about trading one for the other, but about finding balance. If you would like to read up on the basics, you will find them in the article Lunar Nodes: Their Meaning in the Birth Chart.
What does the Aquarius–Leo lunar node axis mean?
Leo represents the heart, the self, pride, creativity, and the question: what makes me unique? Aquarius represents the whole, ideas, freedom, communities, and the question: how can what I am touch something larger?
With the North Node in Aquarius, the focus shifts until early 2028 from the individual to the collective. This does not mean giving up what is yours. The South Node in Leo shows that self-expression and heart are the ground you stand on. It means, rather, that the stage is getting bigger, and it no longer belongs to any one person alone.
Themes that will grow louder during this period:
- Community over going it alone, in projects as well as in relationships.
- Technology, networks, and new forms of togetherness, with all their opportunities and side effects.
- The question of what you actually use your visibility for.
- Freedom that does not mean withdrawal, but connection on your own terms.
For comparison: the Aquarius/Leo axis last appeared from 2007 to 2009, and before that from 1989 to 1990. Both periods brought upheaval in the way people connect and communities organize themselves.
Which signs feel this axis most strongly?
The lunar nodes have the most pronounced effect on the fixed signs, those touched directly by the two nodes and their squares:
Aquarius and Leo. The nodes move directly over the Sun or Ascendant. These are years in which roles shift, often through encounters, groups, or a decision that has been put off for a long time.
Taurus and Scorpio. The nodes are square to these signs. It can feel like pressure from two sides: holding on to the familiar here, risking something new there. Astrology calls this a time of decisions.
All other signs feel the axis through the houses where Aquarius and Leo fall in their birth chart. That can only be determined with your personal birth chart.
Eclipses on this axis
Eclipses always occur near the lunar nodes, which is why they mark the themes of the axis especially clearly. In the coming months, two eclipses fall exactly on the Aquarius/Leo line:
| Date | Event | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 6 February 2027 | Annular solar eclipse | Aquarius |
| 2 August 2027 | Total solar eclipse | Leo |
The eclipse on 2 August 2027 is also the longest total solar eclipse of this century, an astronomical and astrological highlight that we will cover in a separate article.
Your own lunar nodes
Alongside the current transit, every person also has the nodes fixed in their birth chart. There, they describe your personal axis of development: where you come from, where your path is drawing you, and which themes keep returning throughout your life. If your natal nodes fall in Aquarius and Leo, meaning you were born between late 2007 and summer 2009, or between 1989 and 1990, you are currently experiencing a nodal return. In astrology, this is regarded as a time when your own path becomes clearer.
For everyone else, looking at your own axis is worthwhile too, because the current North Node triggers themes wherever it touches your natal nodes or planets. What that means in detail is in your birth chart: in the short chapter on Your Karmic Direction, or in depth in the Lunar Nodes Book, which interprets your axis with all its connections.
For us, the lunar nodes are an image of development, not destiny. They show a direction. Walking it is up to you.
