Lunar nodes: meaning and how to calculate them

By the KosmosGenie editorial team · 5 July 2026 · updated 23 September 2026 · 4 min read

The lunar nodes are among the most mysterious points in a birth chart, even though astronomically they’re quite straightforward: they’re the two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path (the ecliptic). They aren’t celestial bodies, but intersections. Astrological tradition sees them as an axis of growth: where you come from and where your growth is headed.

What are the North Node and South Node?

  • The North Node (ascending node, symbol ☊, traditionally called the “Dragon’s Head”) is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic to the north. Tradition interprets it as your direction of growth: skills and experiences that want to develop in this life, often unfamiliar but fulfilling.
  • The South Node (descending node, ☋, the “Dragon’s Tail”) lies directly opposite. It represents what you bring with you: familiar patterns, talents, and comfort zones that support you, but can also hold you back.

The two always form an axis of 180°: if you know the sign of one, you know the other (the opposite-sign principle is explained in our article about the Descendant).

How do I calculate my lunar nodes?

The nodal axis moves backward through the zodiac and takes about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle, or around a year and a half per sign. This makes it fairly easy to calculate:

  1. Your birth date is almost always enough. Because the node moves so slowly, its sign stays the same for most birth dates. Only if you were born close to a sign change do you need the exact calculation.
  2. An astrological chart gives you the exact position. A fully calculated birth chart shows the nodes down to the degree, including their house positions, which add the life-area context to the interpretation. Your birth time is needed for this.
  3. True or mean node? Ephemerides distinguish between the “mean” node, which is averaged evenly, and the “true” node, which oscillates slightly. The difference is at most about one and a half degrees, so it almost never changes the sign.

What does the lunar node axis mean?

The traditional interpretation is that the South Node describes what you already do well, so well that it can become a comfortable fallback. The North Node points to the opposite quality that life keeps inviting you to explore. For example, with the South Node in Virgo (perfection and control of details), the North Node would be in Pisces, inviting you to practice trust and surrender without losing your attention to detail. These interpretations are prompts for reflection, not instructions for how to live. The axis describes a tension in which both ends have value.

What does the North Node mean in each of the 12 signs?

Your North Node’s sign describes the direction life keeps inviting you to explore, while the opposite sign, your South Node, represents the familiar patterns you come from. A North Node in Aries learns independence and comes from Libra’s tendency to adapt, while a North Node in Libra learns consideration for others and comes from Aries’ tendency to go it alone.

North Node South Node Direction of growth
Aries Libra From adapting to independence: take your own wishes seriously.
Taurus Scorpio From drama to calm: build simple, dependable values.
Gemini Sagittarius From grand truths to curiosity: listen, ask questions, and learn the little things.
Cancer Capricorn From duty to closeness: make room for feelings and belonging.
Leo Aquarius From watching to taking part: show yourself and let your heart speak.
Virgo Pisces From drifting to clarity: find order, practice your craft, and attend to everyday life.
Libra Aries From going it alone to connection: consideration, partnership, and balance.
Scorpio Taurus From holding on to change: embrace depth and let go of the old.
Sagittarius Gemini From distraction to meaning: choose a direction and trust it.
Capricorn Cancer From dependence to responsibility: set your own goals and create your own structure.
Aquarius Leo From the spotlight to community: share your ideas and be part of something bigger.
Pisces Virgo From control to trust: surrender, intuition, and compassion.

The houses touched by your nodal axis show the areas of life where this direction unfolds. A North Node in Aries in the 10th house, for example, learns independence in a career, while in the 7th house, it learns independence in relationships. The Lunar Nodes Book offers an in-depth interpretation of the entire axis.

Are the lunar nodes planets?

No, they’re calculated points where two orbits intersect. That’s why astrological tradition considers them “direction markers” rather than forces that “do” something.

What do the lunar nodes have to do with eclipses?

Solar and lunar eclipses only occur when a full or new Moon takes place near the nodal axis. That’s why the periods around the nodes are called “eclipse seasons.” Find all the eclipse dates for the coming year in the Moon Calendar 2027.

How often does my lunar node position repeat?

The node returns to its birth position about every 18.6 years, an event known as the “nodal return.” Tradition sees this as a time of realignment, occurring around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56, and 74.

Where can I find my exact lunar node positions?

They’re shown in any birth chart calculated down to the degree, including the houses. For an in-depth, personal interpretation of your entire birth chart, including your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, houses, and aspects, explore the Birth Chart Book.
