Here you’ll find all the Mercury retrograde periods in 2027, with dates and zodiac signs, along with a straightforward explanation of what’s really happening in the sky. If you’re looking for this year, you’ll find the dates in our post about Mercury retrograde in 2026.
When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?
Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027. As always, the start and end dates may vary by about a day depending on the source and time zone. The periods and signs are a reliable guide:
| Phase | Period | Zodiac signs |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | 9 February to 3 March 2027 | Pisces → Aquarius |
| Phase 2 | 10 June to 4 July 2027 | Cancer → Gemini |
| Phase 3 | 7 to 28 October 2027 | Scorpio → Libra |
One pattern stands out: each phase begins in one sign and ends in the sign before it. Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac. The fall phase begins at just under 5 degrees in Scorpio and ends at just over 19 degrees in Libra.
What does “retrograde” really mean?
First, the most important point: Mercury does not turn around. Retrograde motion is purely an optical effect. Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than Earth, and about three times a year it overtakes us in its inner orbit. During these overtaking periods, as seen from Earth, it appears to move backward against the background of stars for about three weeks. It’s a regular, precisely predictable occurrence, not an unusual event and certainly not a sign of doom.
What does each of the three phases mean?
In astrological tradition, Mercury represents communication, thinking, learning, technology and travel. For an overview, see our post about the planets in astrology. In the traditional interpretation, the signs in which a retrograde phase takes place give it their own distinct character:
- February/March (Pisces → Aquarius): Thinking between intuition and ideas. An invitation to dream about your plans again and take another look at them: what feels right, and what is just a lovely idea?
- June/July (Cancer → Gemini): Communication close to home. Conversations with family and those around you deserve a second, friendly try. You can sort through old messages and loose ends.
- October (Scorpio → Libra): Depth and balance. Whatever lies unspoken beneath the surface is ready to be brought into the open, fairly, calmly and without power games.
It’s important to keep things in perspective: these interpretations are prompts for reflection, not predictions. Mercury retrograde won’t cancel your travel plans or make contracts fall through. At most, it invites you to communicate a little more mindfully during these weeks, read important things twice and pick up unfinished tasks. The sensible habits for this time, backing up your files, allowing extra time and reading the fine print, are simply good ideas all year round.
