Mars retrograde 2027 (10 January to 1 April): what it means, key dates, and what helps right now

By the KosmosGenie editorial team · 10 September 2026 · updated 11 September 2026 · 4 min read

Mars is the planet associated in astrology with drive, willpower, assertion, and energy. It goes retrograde only about once every two years, and then for roughly two and a half months. That time comes again in 2027: from 10 January to 1 April, Mars moves backward, first through Virgo and then, from late February onward, through Leo. This gives the start of the year an unusual dynamic. Just when everyone wants to hit the ground running with their resolutions, the planet of drive pumps the brakes.

When is Mars retrograde in 2027?

Phase Date
Mars turns retrograde (in Virgo) 10 January 2027
Mars moves back into Leo Late February 2027
Mars turns direct again (in Leo) 1 April 2027
Mars reaches the degree where it turned retrograde again Early June 2027

As with Mercury, Mars also has shadow phases: the degrees it retraces going backward are degrees it already passed once before, and after 1 April it crosses them a third time. The entire phase wraps up fully in June.

What does Mars retrograde mean?

Astronomically, Mars never actually moves backward. The effect arises because Earth overtakes it on the inner orbital track. Astrologically, a retrograde planet is considered to turn its energy inward. For Mars, this means that energy normally directed outward, into projects, conflicts, and action, turns inward instead. Experiences that are common during this period include:

  • Plans move more slowly than expected, even when you are putting in the effort.
  • Old conflicts resurface, often with people you have clashed with before.
  • Questions about your own motivation become louder: do I actually want this, or do I just want to prove something?
  • Physically, many people feel less resilient, and sports injuries become more frequent when that signal is ignored.

The classic advice for this period is to avoid starting new battles and instead finish or reconsider ones already underway. It is a good time for strategy and a poor one for charging ahead.

Virgo and Leo: the tone of this phase

Mars begins its retrograde in Virgo, the sign of work, analysis, and perfectionism. January therefore becomes a time for taking plans apart and examining them closely. Anyone who tries to do too much at once on 1 January will quickly discover where things snag.

From late February, Mars returns to Leo. Leo is associated with pride, self-expression, and the need to be seen. With Mars retrograde there, the central question becomes what you are actually fighting for: the cause, or the applause? Some egos will take a hit during these weeks. Astrology sees this as an invitation to get more honest about your own motivation. Fittingly, Jupiter spends the entire year in Leo, lending the phase a generous quality: those who examine themselves tend to grow.

Who feels Mars retrograde most strongly?

Mars moves back and forth between the end of Leo and the beginning of Virgo. The effect is strongest for people with their Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or Mars in the final degrees of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, or Scorpio, and in the early degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini, or Sagittarius.

For everyone else, what matters is the house in which Leo and Virgo fall in their birth chart. Mars retrograde in the 6th house slows down work, in the 7th house it affects partnerships, and in the 10th house it puts the brakes on professional ambition. Which house that is for you can only be determined with your birth chart. That is exactly what the personal Yearly Horoscope 2027 is designed for.

How do you make the most of these twelve weeks?

  1. Push your resolutions to February. Not the idea, just the start. If you plan in January and begin in April, the transit is working with you, not against you.
  2. Resolve old conflicts rather than starting new ones. Mars retrograde brings unfinished business back to the surface. That is your chance to close it out.
  3. Listen to your body. Having less energy is normal during this period. Exercise, yes, but in moderation. Injuries happen when you push through your own fatigue.
  4. Check your motivation. For every major project, write down why you want it. If the reason holds up, the project holds up too.
  5. Be patient with others. You are not the only one being slowed down. Colleagues, partners, children, everyone is running under the same Mars.

From 1 April onward, Mars picks up speed again, and by early June it is definitively on new ground. Anything reconsidered in the weeks before will have a much stronger foundation to build on.
