The time between Christmas and Epiphany feels different from the rest of the year in many families: it’s the Rauhnächte, or “rough nights.” These twelve nights are traditionally a time to burn incense, write down wishes, pay attention to dreams and, according to an old belief, take a glimpse into the year ahead. In 2026, the beginning also coincides with the biggest full moon of the year, and the final night falls just before a new moon. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting setting for the turn of the year.
Here you’ll find all the dates for the Rauhnächte 2026/2027, the traditional connection between each night and a month, the most popular customs and what’s happening in the sky astrologically during this time.
When are the Rauhnächte in 2026/2027?
The Rauhnächte 2026/2027 begin on the night of 24 to 25 December 2026 and end on the night of 5 to 6 January 2027. These are the traditional twelve nights. If you follow the older count, which begins with Thomas Night, you’ll start on 21 December, the winter solstice, and count thirteen nights.
Both ways of counting are common, and neither is “more correct” than the other. The twelve-night count fits the idea that each night represents a month of the coming year. The thirteen-night count includes the winter solstice as a kind of opening, or night zero, representing the whole year.
Which month does each Rauhnacht represent?
In the most common tradition, the first Rauhnacht (24 to 25 December) represents January, the second represents February, and so on, through the twelfth night (4 to 5 January), which reflects December. The night of 6 January marks the close, when the themes come together once more.
| Night | Date | Represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Rauhnacht | 24 to 25 December 2026 | January 2027 |
| 2nd Rauhnacht | 25 to 26 December 2026 | February 2027 |
| 3rd Rauhnacht | 26 to 27 December 2026 | March 2027 |
| 4th Rauhnacht | 27 to 28 December 2026 | April 2027 |
| 5th Rauhnacht | 28 to 29 December 2026 | May 2027 |
| 6th Rauhnacht | 29 to 30 December 2026 | June 2027 |
| 7th Rauhnacht | 30 to 31 December 2026 | July 2027 |
| 8th Rauhnacht | 31 December to 1 January 2027 | August 2027 |
| 9th Rauhnacht | 1 to 2 January 2027 | September 2027 |
| 10th Rauhnacht | 2 to 3 January 2027 | October 2027 |
| 11th Rauhnacht | 3 to 4 January 2027 | November 2027 |
| 12th Rauhnacht | 4 to 5 January 2027 | December 2027 |
| Closing night | 5 to 6 January 2027 | Epiphany, a look back at all twelve |
Some families begin the count one night later, with the night of 26 December. In that case, the dates in the table shift by one day, and the final night is the night of 6 January. The important thing is simply to choose one way of counting and stick with it.
Where do the Rauhnächte come from?
The Rauhnächte are rooted in the difference between the lunar and solar years: twelve lunar months add up to just 354 days, while the solar year has 365. The eleven days and twelve nights in between were seen as a time “between the years,” when the usual order of things was suspended. The name probably comes from the practice of burning incense to cleanse homes and barns during these nights, or from the German word “rauh,” meaning wild and untamed.
According to tradition, people should avoid hanging laundry, lending things and getting into arguments during this time. The wild nights belonged to spirits, the Perchten and anything left unresolved from the old year. Much of this is folklore, but the basic idea still resonates today: a time to slow down, let the old year come to a close and pay attention, rather than making a fresh start.
What rituals are part of the Rauhnächte?
The best-known Rauhnächte rituals are burning incense in the home, writing down thirteen wishes, keeping a dream journal and drawing a card or oracle each night. None of these rituals is required. Most people choose two or three that feel right for them.
- Burning incense. Walk through every room with frankincense, sage, mugwort or a ready-made blend, opening the windows to let the old year out. Above all, it’s a mindful way to bring things to a close.
- Thirteen wishes. On 24 December, write thirteen wishes for the new year on slips of paper. Burn one without reading it on each Rauhnacht: the universe will take care of that wish. The thirteenth slip, the one left over, is the wish you’ll take care of yourself.
- Dream journal. Each morning, write down whatever you remember from your dreams. According to tradition, each dream relates to the month represented by that night.
- One card each night. Each evening, draw a card from the Tarot or another deck and write it down. By 6 January, you’ll have a year-at-a-glance in twelve images. If you’re new to Tarot, our Tarot for Beginners guide can help you get started.
- Quiet. Perhaps the most powerful custom of all: make fewer plans, go to bed earlier, take a walk and don’t rush into new resolutions.
What’s happening in the sky during the Rauhnächte 2026/2027?
The Rauhnächte 2026/2027 begin with the biggest full moon of the year and end just before a new moon in Capricorn. In between, Mercury changes signs, Venus stays in Scorpio the whole time, and Mars nearly comes to a standstill in Virgo.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 21 December 2026, 9:50 p.m. | Winter solstice, the Sun moves into Capricorn |
| 24 December 2026, 2:28 a.m. | Full Moon in Cancer, the Christmas Eve supermoon |
| 25 December 2026 | Mercury moves from Sagittarius into Capricorn |
| 24 December to 6 January | Venus moves through the second half of Scorpio |
| 24 December to 6 January | Mars nearly comes to a standstill in Virgo and turns retrograde on 10 January |
| since 13 December 2026 | Jupiter is retrograde in Leo until 13 April 2027 |
| 7 January 2027, 9:25 p.m. | New Moon in Capricorn, the first new moon of the year |
From an astrological perspective, this creates a cohesive picture. The Full Moon in Cancer at the beginning brings family, home and belonging into focus, the very themes of Christmas Eve. In the days that follow, the Sun in Capricorn asks what will truly stand the test of time among your resolutions. Mercury’s move into Capricorn on Christmas Day brings a more practical tone to your thoughts and plans. Venus in Scorpio makes conversations during these nights more likely to go deep than stay on the surface. And Mars nearly standing still fits the old rule: during the Rauhnächte, you don’t start anything, you take a look around. You can revisit what’s on your plate in Virgo at your own pace from 10 January onward. Find out more in our article on Mars Retrograde in 2027.
The New Moon on 7 January is the real starting point. If you’ve gathered wishes during the Rauhnächte, this is the day to turn them into first steps.
How can you interpret your Rauhnächte for 2027?
The easiest way is to use a notebook: give each night a page for the date, the month it represents, your dream, the card you drew and one observation from the day. On 6 January, read through everything at once and mark what repeats. In Rauhnächte interpretations, recurring themes matter more than individual images.
For example, if a move or a trip appears in both the third and ninth nights, it may be worth marking March and September 2027 in your calendar. Whether it actually happens is an open question. The value is in moving through the year with a question in mind, rather than just a list of appointments.
If you’d like to take a more structured look at the whole year, there are two options that pair well with the Rauhnächte: the Tarot Year Book explores twelve monthly cards in detail, much like drawing twelve cards over the twelve nights, but with text for each card. The personal Yearly Horoscope uses your birth details to calculate which months of 2027 may bring particular activity into your life. For a look at what’s happening in the sky more generally, see the Yearly Horoscope 2027.
Are the Rauhnächte suitable for children?
Yes, in a simple form. Kids enjoy burning incense, writing down wishes and the idea that each night reveals something about a month. Reading aloud, lighting a candle and making one wish each evening is enough. You can leave out the Perchten ghost stories, or explain them for what they are: old tales from a time when winter was dark and long.
Three ideas for the Rauhnächte 2026/2027
- Watch the supermoon on 24 December. It reaches its full phase at 2:28 a.m. and will be visible throughout the night. It’s hard to imagine a better start to twelve special nights.
- Don’t do everything at once. Two rituals are enough. If you take on too much for twelve nights, you may give up after the fourth.
- Keep 7 January free. The New Moon in Capricorn is the day to take your first concrete step into the new year.
