You probably know your zodiac sign, but do you know your Life Path Number? In numerology, it’s considered one of the most important numbers of all. It’s based on your birth date, and you can calculate your Life Path Number without any prior knowledge. All you need is your birth day, month, and year, plus a little mental math. In this post, I’ll show you how to do it step by step and explain what the numbers 1 to 9 traditionally mean.
You can also calculate your number right here: our Life Path Number Calculator shows every step, and from there you can explore a post about each number from 1 to 9, as well as the Master Numbers.
What is a Life Path Number?
Your Life Path Number, also called your Destiny Number or birth number, is calculated from your full date of birth. In the numerological tradition, it describes something like the guiding thread of your life: your basic outlook, your natural strengths, and the themes that keep coming up for you.
Unlike your Sun sign, which is determined by the position of the Sun, your Life Path Number is calculated entirely with numbers. That’s what makes it so accessible: anyone can work it out with a pen and paper.
How do I calculate my Life Path Number?
The principle is always the same: Add all the digits in your birth date, then keep reducing the total until only one digit remains. Let’s use 7 June 1990 as an example:
- Write your birth date in digits: 7.6.1990
- Add all the digits: 7 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32
- Reduce again: 3 + 2 = 5
So the Life Path Number for this date is 5.
If your first total has two digits, simply add those digits together again. Here’s a second example, 24 December 1988:
- 2 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 35
- 3 + 5 = 8
Here, the Life Path Number is 8. As you can see, no matter how large the first total is, you keep adding its digits together until only one remains.
What about the Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33?
There’s one important exception. If you arrive at 11, 22, or 33 while adding the digits, you do not reduce the number any further. In numerology, these three are considered Master Numbers and, according to tradition, each carries its own especially powerful meaning.
For example, 7 July 1990 adds up to 7 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33. Since 33 is a Master Number, it stays as it is. You don’t reduce it to 6. Find out more in the post Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33.

Your Life Path Number as part of a bigger picture
Your Life Path Number is a wonderful place to start, but it’s only one of several key numbers. In numerology, numbers derived from your birth date and your name come together to create a multifaceted picture. For example, your Name Number shows how you express yourself and what moves you deep down.
Above all, remember that these numbers are a mirror for self-reflection, not a prediction. They don’t tell you what will happen. They invite you to take a step back and look at yourself from a fresh perspective.
